Info about Alice in Chains
Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987, a city that would soon become the center of the grunge movement. The band originated when guitarist Jerry Cantrell met vocalist Layne Staley, who was then singing in a local glam-metal band called Sleze (later renamed Alice N’ Chains). Cantrell convinced Staley to join a new project that blended heavy metal with darker, more introspective lyrics. Along with drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr, Alice in Chains took shape and quickly began performing in Seattle’s underground club scene.
In their early years, the band stood out from other emerging grunge acts due to their strong metal influences, gloomy atmosphere, and distinctive vocal harmonies between Staley and Cantrell. They signed with Columbia Records in 1989, a major step that set them apart from many local bands still struggling for recognition. Their debut album Facelift (1990) marked a breakthrough, driven by the success of the single Man in the Box, which received heavy rotation on MTV.
As the band gained popularity, their music grew darker and more emotionally intense. Albums like Dirt (1992) reflected personal struggles, particularly Staley’s battle with addiction. Despite internal difficulties, Alice in Chains became one of the most influential bands of the early 1990s. After Staley’s death in 2002, the band reunited in 2005 with singer William DuVall and continued making critically acclaimed albums. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell has also released serveral well received solo albums.
