Churchill dropped out of the University of Michigan in 1929 to make money playing in local dance halls and clubs. Big-band leader Fred Waring saw him performing in a small restaurant and quickly hired him. Churchill performed and became an arranger with Fred Waring & The Pennsylvanians. On one of Waring's NBC radio programs, Churchill played 11 instruments.
Best known for arranging "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair".
