American singer, songwriter, musician and actor, born 21 April 1947 in Muskegon, Michigan, USA. Founding member of [a39770].
He started as a drummer, first playing with his high school band [a=The Iguanas (3)], and soon joining Blues band [a=The Prime Movers (3)]. At the same period he worked at record shop Discount Records in Ann Arbor, while he was attending college. In 1967, he decided to become a vocalist forming [a39770] with brothers Ron and Scott Asheton, and their friend Dave Alexander.
After releasing two iconic albums with The Stooges - the self-titled debut and "Funhouse" - the band collapsed in 1971. He then teamed up with guitarist James Williamson (who had briefly played in The Stooges), and bringing back the Ashetons, he formed a new version of the band. The group released "Raw Power" in 1973, and broke up for good the next year.
David Bowie (a huge admirer of Pop's) got Iggy under his wing in 1976, and after touring together, Bowie went on to produce his first solo album, called "The Idiot" (out in 1977). The same year another Bowie collaboration, with more contribution by Iggy, came out - his second solo album "Lust For Life". By the end of 1977, an album he had recorded with Williamson in 1975 called "Kill City" was also released.
Pop went on to release more than 15 albums in the coming decades, collaborating with artists such as Steve Jones (of the Sex Pistols), Slash (of Guns 'n' Roses) and Joshua Homme (of Queens Of The Stone Age). He worked with Bowie again in the 1986 album "Blah Blah Blah", while Bowie also covered 5 of his songs for his '80s albums (with "[m=51165]" turning into a major hit). The Stooges reformed in 2003, releasing two more albums, and remained active up until 2014, when Scott Asheton passed away.
Pop received the Polar Music Prize in 2022.
